Healthy Schools

Our vision for children and young people is to help all our children and young people to achieve their full potential and enjoy life.  We are using the National Healthy Schools programme as a key enabler to help us achieve our outcomes.

The National Healthy Schools Programme is an exciting initiative that promotes the link between health, behavior and achievement.  Based on a whole school approach to improving physical and emotional well-being, we support schools as they motivate children and young people to rear their full potential and do better in both learning and life.

Our vision

We want all children and young people to be healthy and achieve, at school and in life.

We believe that by providing opportunities at school for enhancing emotional and physical health, we will improve long term health, reduce health inequalities, increase social inclusion and raise achievement for all.

Our objectives

  • To involve the whole school community in improving their health and happiness.
  • To raise pupil achievement and promote social inclusion.
  • To support long-term sustainable change so that being healthy becomes an integral part of social life.
  • To use our four core themes - Personal, Social and Health Education, Healthy Eating, Physical Activity and Emotional Health and Well-being - to broaden the understanding of being healthy.

Our targets

By 2009, for all schools to be participating in the National Healthy Schools Programme and for 75% to have achieved National Healthy Schools Status.

Our Values

  • Health for all: we believe that every child matters and that everyone should have the opportunity to be healthy and get the most out of life.
  • A whole school approach; we aim to engage the whole community so that improvement can happen.
  • Working in partnership: we encourage successful partnerships between education and health professionals and with all members of the school community
